Jane Chandler Walker (Walker)
Jane Chandler Walker, age 64, of Brentwood, MO, died on Sun., Oct. 16, 2016 at home from ALS.
She is pre-deceased by her father, the late Dr. Willard B. Walker, and leaves behind her mother Patsy Chandler Walker, her loving partner Joseph Smentowski, siblings John Walker, Ann Walker Stanley, Kathy Walker, Nancy W. Jenkins (Kirby), and Molly Walker (Rick Goldberg), nephew and nieces: Tyler and wife Jen Vincent, Ben and Kate Rangson, and Lucy and Sam Goldberg, and great aunt to Jack. She was born in St. Louis and lived in the area her entire life. The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to all of the care-givers that have helped us in the past year. Thank you for all you have done.
Jane loved nature and sharing it with others. She was an expert bird watcher and had a beautiful native plant garden at her home in Kirkwood. After attending Albion College (now University) UMSL and St. Louis Community College at Meramec, Jane was a substitute teacher in science. She became the instructor for K-12 Field Science Program at Tyson Research Center, bringing nature observation to thousands of school children. In the late 1990s she found a new calling – dragonflies and damselflies! She focused her research on the Federally Endangered Hine’s emerald dragonfly and publish her research in peer review scientific journals. She was the Vice President of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas, an avid member of the Webster Groves Nature Study Society, Missouri Native Plants Society and other conservation groups.
Services: A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (110 North Warson Rd, 63124) Sat., Oct. 22, at 12:00 with a reception following. There will be visitation at Bopp Chapel on Fri., Oct. 21, from 6-8 pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the ALS Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and The American Chestnut Foundation.
