Llewellyn Maitland Heigham, Jr. (Llew) was born September 9, 1933 in Washington DC to Llewellyn Maitland Heigham and Naomi Heigham (nee Beall). He grew up in Oxen Hill, MD, where his grandfather was the rector at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, and graduated from University of Maryland. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Guam as well as in Washington DC at the Division of Naval History. After several years of soul-searching, in 1960 he followed the call to ministry and enrolled in St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, MO, a Methodist seminary. The next year, he married Ella Jean Dixon in Ava, MO near where his parents had relocated. While in seminary he served student charges in Rockville and Mt. Zion churches in Missouri. After finishing seminary, the two moved to Madison, NJ where he earned another master’s degree from Drew University.

Llew accepted another student charge, so he and Ella moved to Toms River, NJ where he was instrumental in the construction of a new church building in 1969. Their three children were born in Toms River. While living in New Jersey, Llew completed a third masters at Princeton University. In 1971, he returned to Missouri and took a position that included administrative and teaching duties at St. Paul School of Theology, his alma mater. While there, he returned to the Episcopal Church and served the Church of the Resurrection in Blue Springs and St. Michael’s in Independence. In 1980, he accepted a call to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Moberly where he fully enjoyed the experience of working in a parish within a vibrant small town. While serving in Moberly, he completed his DMin at the University of the South. A few years later, he accepted a call to Grace Episcopal Church, Kirkwood, MO as Associate. At Grace he loved his pastoral work, art shows, and reader’s theater, as well as his work in the Episcopal School for Ministry. He retired in 2000 and was soon called to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Carondelet, MO, where he joyfully served part-time until his full retirement in 2010. Over the years he treasured his work within the ministry because he was able to build truly meaningful relationships with those in his congregations, and he came to love all whom he served.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ella Jean; three children: Angela Gillis (husband, Glen) of Saskatoon, Canada, Juanita Heigham (husband, Yuki Kunisada) of Nagoya, Japan, and Tre’ (Llewellyn M. Heigham III) (wife, Melissa); four grandchildren: Nicole Gillis, Owen and Emily Heigham, and Jace Heigham Kunisada; a sister: Nickie Jones of Marshfield, MO; a niece: Nikki Chaffin and family; two nephews: David Jones and family, and John Paul Jones all of Marshfield, MO; a cousin, Lee Williams of Washington, DC; and the countless dear friends he loved and to whom he ministered.

Services for Llew will be at Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood on Friday, August 18 at 4 p.m. with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or Grace Episcopal Church Legacy Fund.
