Obituary for Eugene Joseph Fix

Eugene Joseph Fix
Eugene Joseph Fix passed away peacefully on January 13, 2018, at the Aberdeen Heights senior living community in Kirkwood, Missouri. He will be remembered for his wit, compassion, and warm-hearted smile.

Gene was born on November 28, 1931 in Belleville, Illinois to Hugo F. Fix and Hilda F. (Buechle) Fix. He graduated from Belleville’s Cathedral High School in 1949. Gene worked at the family’s grocery store until he enlisted in the Air Force in 1951. He served honorably for four years, including one year in Korea during the Korean War. Returning from active service, he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Illinois.

He met the love of his life June Hodapp in 1956 and they were married on June 8, 1957. They had five children together.

The growing family settled in Belleville, Illinois until 1968 when they moved to Shoreview, Minnesota. The family returned to the St. Louis area in 1972. For 39 years, Des Peres, Missouri was their home until June and Gene moved to Aberdeen Heights in 2011.

Gene was a devout parishioner at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church in Kirkwood where he served as a lector and committee member for many years. He was a dedicated volunteer with the Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement, the United Way, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Gene enjoyed traveling with June to Florida, Arizona, New England, and throughout the world. He also enjoyed fishing trips, playing golf, Cardinal baseball, and taking family vacations, often with a pop-up camper pulled by a Country Squire station wagon filled with the family and their dog Smokey. His greatest joy was being surrounded by friends and family, especially his seven grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his children, Joseph Fix and his wife Stacey of Newbury, Massachusetts, Tom Fix and his wife Linda of Carthage, Missouri, Greg Fix and his wife Julie of Glendale, Missouri, Lisa Underriner and her husband Joe of Glendale, Missouri, and Lori Fix of Webster Groves, Missouri; grandchildren Sara Fix, Allison Fix, Katie Fix, Sam Fix, Ava Fix, Zach Manwaring, and Will Underriner; his sisters-in-law Mary Jennings, Betty Bucher, Shirley Hines, Rita Forneris and her husband Tony, and Kathleen Gross and her husband Paul; sister-in-law Betty Hodapp, brother-in-law Luke Ayuso, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, June; his sister Elvira Clements, sister-in-law Marguerite Ayuso, brothers-in-law John Hodapp, Wilfred Jennings, and James Bucher.

Funeral Mass Sat., Jan. 20, 10:00am at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church, Ballas and Dougherty Ferry Rd. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation Fri. 4-8:00pm at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 9370 Olive Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63132 or www.alz.org/stl.
