Obituary for Urban "Bud" Cartier Jr.

Urban “Bud” Cartier, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 4th in St. Louis, MO at the age of 87.

Bud is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elaine, his sons, Paul, Richard and Urban III, his daughter, Jeannie Sauleau, his sister Renee Cartier, and his 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Loretta and Urban, his sister Loretta Mae, his brother Victor who died in Vietnam in 1969, and his son John who passed away in 2016.

Bud was born on August 22, 1930 in St. Louis. He graduated from Christian Brothers College in 1948 and married Elaine Schaeffler in 1950. Bud held various executive positions in sales, marketing, advertising and public relations across the hotel, restaurant and travel industry. His professional highlights include managing sales and marketing for Sheraton Corporation of America, the St. Louis Hawks NBA club, Tan Tar A Resort and Country Club and the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater St. Louis. Hospitality was his life, both in the working years where he served as chairman of the St. Louis Cervantes Convention Center Steering Committee, President of the Missouri Association and Territorial Director of the National Association of Hotel Sales Managers as well as in his retired years, sailing the world with Elaine as Cruise Hosts onboard luxury cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas and Silversea.

Bud was an active CBC alumni, meeting with the Class of ’48 regularly for the last 70 years. Friend to everyone from Stan Musial to each patron that stepped through the doors of his sons’ restaurants, The Down Under in Des Peres and PJ’s Tavern in Kirkwood, Bud will be remembered for his infectious smile and charming stories as well as his famous barbequed cheeseburgers and pork steaks at every holiday gathering. He was even honored alongside his wife with the Kirkwood Award “Bud and Elaine Cartier Day.”

Funeral Mass 11am, Wednesday, March 7th at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Kirkwood. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bud’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Wounded Warrior Project are appreciated. The family would like to thank St. John’s Mercy St. Louis for their dedicated care in his final hours.
