Obituary for Elizabeth Darnell "Libby" Barrett

Elizabeth Darnell "Libby" Barrett
Barrett, Elizabeth (“Libby”) Darnell, fortified with the Sacraments on November 8, 2018.

Dear mother of Katherine McCarthy Barrett Beimdiek (Stephen Beimdiek), Susan Randolph Barrett Bowen (Patrick Bowen) and Lucy Cotton Barrett Garrison (Benjamin Garrison); dear grandmother of Margaret and Barrett Beimdiek, and Avery, Elizabeth, Lucy and Liam Bowen; dear sister, aunt and friend to many. Preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Matthew Cotton Darnell, Jr. and Susan Julia Early Darnell, of Lexington, Kentucky.

Libby was a passionate educator and avid reader. She was active in her children’s schools, and obtained her Masters’ Degree later in life so she could become an elementary school teacher and make a difference for others. Libby was a talented piano player who loved opera and classical music. She made lifelong friends everywhere she lived – from Lexington, to the Ladywood School in Indianapolis, to St. Louis and Phoenix. She could light up the room with her smile. She was always giving and charitable, and was very active in the Desert Club, a women’s service organization that provides scholarships for Arizona students. She was an example to all, especially her children and grandchildren, in whom she took great pride.

Libby valiantly fought multiple sclerosis for years, and through it all, never complained. She embodied courage, dignity, and grace until the end. Many thanks to her caregivers at Laclede Groves, who were a constant source of love, support and friendship.

Services: Visitation on Monday, November 12 from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63122, immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 341 East Lockwood Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63119. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to The Desert Club, P.O. Box 237, Mesa, Arizona 85211-0237 or Laclede Groves c/o Lutheran Senior Services Benevolent Care, 723 South Laclede Station Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63119.
