Herbert Ernest Smith
Herbert Ernest “Smitty” Smith
Smith, Herbert Ernest “Smitty”, a lifetime educator, WWII Veteran, tireless community volunteer, and longtime Kirkwood resident, died peacefully on Feb. 19, 2017.

Born on May 13, 1925. he was the beloved husband of the late Virginia Hubbard Smith; dear father of Steve (Rose), Becky (Jim) Dale, Sylvia Smith, and the late Christine Smith; grandfather of Amanda (Sean) Hook, Jeremy Marling, Michael (Ceci) Santos, Herbert Smith and Sarah Wilson; and great-grandfather of Marco and Mia Santos, and Matthew Wilson.

Herbert lived a long and full life. He was in the Army Air Corps and stationed Japan following WWII. He obtained his Masters from the University of Missouri at Columbia and had a career in teaching and administration in the Kirkwood schools. He was Assistant Principal at Kirkwood High, known by many students as “The Dart”. He retired from teaching in 1983. He was President of MSTA for two years and remained active with Kirkwood Retired Teachers Association . Herbert loved volunteering and served many local organizations.
