SHS remembrances
I had two classes with Rod in high school, band and physiology. Rod was my lab partner in physiology and that's where I got to know him and his wonderful sense of humor. While most of our classmates were upperclassmen, Rod and I were both sophomores and that may be why we were partnered for lab. Our teacher, Mr. Kroll, would ocassionally talk about current events and politics to fill in time at the end of class, or during periods where we were working on an experiment. There was a presidential election that fall and Mr. Kroll asked the class one morning how many of us would be old enough to vote for George McGovern in November. Rod spoke up and told him that he would never be that old!
During another class period, Mr. Kroll challenged us to unravel the small intestines of our fetal pig, and if we could do it without breaking them, he would give us extra credit. Rod and I had finished our lab, so we set out to carefully cut away the membrane that holds the intestines into a "ball." We did it! It took the entire lab period, but we were both amazed at the length of the organ, it was nearly 3 feet long, and pleased with the extra credit.
Rod and I didn't have a lot in common. He liked music and band, I played in the band because my parents made me. I think he was looking forward to getting out of physiology so he would be done with his "science" requirement. I loved science and wanted to take all of the classes I could. However, I learned during physiology class that both he and I watched "All-Star Wrestling" on TV. Both of thus thought it was the best comedy program on TV at the time. That says a lot about early 1970's TV. Rod knew the characters: The Graduate, who claimed to be the smartest man in wrestling, if not the world; Pretty-boy Bobby Heenan; Don Gagne, the world's most "scientific wrestler;" Dirty Dusty Rhodes; Andre the Giant; The Sheik; etc. The wrestling was staged, but the interviews were hysterical. We used to trade turns repeating some of the ridiculous things these men said before or after their "matches." It was fun.
